Universally-Accessible Gardening: Home

Introduction

The therapeutic benefits of plants have been known for thousands of years. Horticultural therapy, however, is a therapeutic modality using plant-based activities, facilitated by a trained therapist, to maintain wellness and improve the lives of people with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Populations that benefit from Horticultural Therapy include “at-risk” youth, as well as adults and seniors who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, depression, substance abuse, incarceration, and many other ills. Horticultural Therapy is currently practiced in hospitals, senior settings, correctional facilities, community gardens, rehabilitation programs, and schools.
