Youth and Trees: Websites

PHS Tree Tenders is a training program that empowers invested residents to make dramatic strides toward restoring and caring for their local tree canopy. Many Tree Tenders actively involve neighborhood youth in their community tree stewardship work. The youth activities found here are a compilation of tried and true programs to educate and inspire youth to care for and love trees.

In working toward the PHS Patch, girls will gain knowledge and skills to promote greening and its power to improve lives, build relationships, and transform communities. Each age level requires completion of a different number of activities from the workbook. After your troop has completed the requirements, contact Linda Delenick, program director, at ldelenick@gsep.org, and indicate which projects were carried out and how many girls participated. You will receive a voucher to purchase the patches at the Council shop of your choice.

The Arbor Day Foundation and the Dimensions Educational Research Foundation have collaborated to create the Nature Explore program, providing educators, designers and families with comprehensive resources to connect children with the natural world on a daily basis.

Talk About Trees from California is a non-profit program dedicated to educating children about the responsible management and use of California's renewable forest resources. The Lesson Plans offer a nine-part sequence on trees.

Penn State EXTENSION and School of Forest Resources is committed to educating youth, teachers, and other youth educators about renewable natural resources. This page offers lesson plans for ages K-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

A workbook for kids 9 years-old and up that introduces trees using puzzles, projects, and activities all explained by Sylvan the Tree and his friends Hawk, Squirrel, and Mantid.

Trees for Wildlife (formerly Trees for the 21st Century) educates youth about the role of trees in our environment, how individuals can take action to plant trees and provides stewardship for sustaining trees locally and across the nation. Trees for Wildlife also explores the unique connection wildlife have with trees and the essential role for habitat trees play for wildlife.Additionally, Trees for Wildlife is a great opportunity to have youth learn about how to improve their environmental footprint and serves as a supplement to NWF’s Eco-School USA program which provides schools an opportunity to “green their school, green their grounds and green the students”.
