PHS Headquarters Plant List: Winter 2017 - 2018

Ever wonder what is planted in front of PHS? This subject guide will provide information on the plants currently planted in and around PHS. PHS Project Manager Sam Keitch designs and plant these attractive displays.

Carex Evergold

Ideal for containers, small spaces, and rock gardens. Evergold Japanese sedge springs up in gorgeous clumps of cascading, fine-textured foliage. Its narrow, dark green leaves are lined with golden stripes. Growing to 18" tall, the plants' tidy mounding habit make them good options for containers, small spaces and rock gardens.

Cedrus atlantica 'Aurea'

‘Aurea’ is a large, rather slow-growing conifer developing a broadly conical outline with age, the young foliage golden yellow becoming greenish-yellow as it ages.

Chamaecyparis ‘Boulevard’

Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Boulevard’ is among the most popular and widely planted trees in the nursery trade. It is a silvery blue, slow-growing bushy selection of Sawara cypress with large, distinctive, 0.3 inch (5 – 6 mm) long juvenile leaves that are awl-shaped and soft to the touch. Over time, a plant will become broadly conical approaching mature dimensions of 3 to 4 feet (1 – 1.3 m) tall and 3 feet (1 m) wide, a rate of growth of 3 to 4 inches (7.5 – 10 cm) per year.

Cotoneaster ‘Scarlet Leader’

Scarlet Leader is an excellent, low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub. Great for a dense groundcover, erosion control or for cascading over a wall. White flowers are produced in late spring, followed by red berries in fall and winter. Foliage turns a lovely reddish-purple in autumn.

Heuchera ‘Obsidian’

Dark-purple, almost black leaves are crowned with creamy-white airy panicles.  Coral bells, coral bells! ‘Obsidian’ casts a spell in the border with dark-purple, almost black leaves in late spring to early summer appear petite, delicate, creamy-white flowers borne in open, airy panicles on slender 20-24” stems.

Hedera Helix 'Ivy'

Hedera helix, commonly known as English ivy, is a vigorous, aggressive, fast-growing, woody evergreen perennial that is primarily grown as a climbing vine or trailing ground cover. As a climbing vine, it may over time grow upwards to 50-100' in height. As a ground cover, it typically grows to 6-9" tall but spreads over time to 50-100'.

Ilex ‘Sky Pencil’

Ilex crenata, commonly known as Japanese holly or box-leaved holly, is a dense, multi-branched, evergreen shrub with a rounded form that typically matures to 5-10’ tall and as wide. It is native to forests, thickets and mountain slopes in Japan, Korea, China and eastern Russia (Sakhalin). It is noted for its ovate to elliptic, crenate to serrulate, glossy, spineless, evergreen, deep green leaves (to 1 1/4" long) which are attractive all year, 4 petaled white flowers which bloom in 3-7 flowered cymes in late spring (May-June), and black rounded somewhat inconspicuous fruits (drupes to 1/4” diameter) which mature in fall on pollinated female plants.

Muhlenbergia ‘Undaunted’

Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass (Plant Select) has an impressive late summer display of see-through amber-pink flower spikes. This is the one Muhly grass with showy pink flowering plumes that can be grown in USDA zones 5 and 6. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).

Panicum 'Shenandoah'

'Shenandoah' is truly a plant for all seasons. In early summer, its leaf blades are tipped in red, and by autumn, the entire leaf is a rich burgundy color, topped by pink plumes. In winter, the leaf color fades to beige; the blades persist and offer cover to birds. 'Shenandoah' is a compact selection of an American native prairie grass.

Red Twig Dogwood Cornus ‘Arctic Fire’

Cornus are best known for providing striking winter beauty to the garden. The bare red stems provide colorful interest and are excellent for holiday arrangements. In spring, Cornus sports small but charming white flowers and has attractive foliage all growing season long. Good shrub for colder zones (3 & 4).

Yucca ‘Color Guard’

Yucca filamentosa, commonly called Adam’s needle, Spanish bayonet, yucca and needle palm, is a virtually stemless broadleaf evergreen shrub (though it looks more like a perennial than a shrub) that is native to beaches, sand dunes and fields from South Carolina south to Florida and Mississippi.
