PHS Headquarters Plant List: Summer 2018

Asparagus ‘Purple Passion’

Purple Passion is a unique asparagus variety especially suited to the asparagus enthusiast, whether home gardener or commercial grower. Its special, attractive purple color, flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others.

Begonia luxurians

Begonia luxurians is an erect woody herb with purple stems.This robust, upright-growing species can grow 2.5 to 4m (8-13 feet) tall. The stems are hairy when young and become hairless with age. The leaves have 7-18 palmate lobes and hairy stalks.

Bismarckia nobilis

Bismarckia is a monotypic palm genus named for the first chancellor of the German Empire, Prince Otto von Bismarck and the epithet for its only species, Bismarckia nobilis, comes from Latin for 'noble'.

Carex ‘Bronco’

Carex comans 'Bronco Color Grass' (New Zealand Hair Sedge, Bronze Hair Sedge). This deep bronze-brown colored sedge makes a unique addition to the garden. Thin foliage is gracefully arching, forming an attractive mound. Winter and early season growth is tinged a beautiful coppery-pink, tipped with silver.

Cordyline fruticosa 'Singapore Twist'

Singapore Twist Ti Plant is an evergreen shrub that averages 6 to 8 feet in height with a spread of 2 to 3 feet. It has an upright, clumping growth habit. It has a moderate growth rate.  Leaves are evergreen, linear, strap-like in shape, opposite in arrangement with two rows on each side of stem giving a fan-like shape, simple, and somewhat glossy.

Cosmos atrosanguineus

Cosmos atrosanguineus, commonly called chocolate cosmos, is a tuberous-rooted, tender perennial that features brownish-red flowers (to 1.5") with a chocolate scent atop slender 2-3' stems from early summer to fall.

Craspedia ‘Billy Buttons’

 

 

Craspedia is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family commonly known as billy buttons and woollyheads. They are native to Australia and New Zealand where they grow in a variety of habitats from sea level to the Alps.

Cyathea cooperia (Australian Tree fern)

Cyathea cooperi is a medium-to-large fast growing tree fern, to 15 metres (49 ft) in height with a 12-inch (30 cm) thick trunk. The apex of the trunk and unfurling crosiers are particularly attractive, covered as they are with conspicuous long, silky, straw colored scales.

Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’

Combining fantastic silvery-green foliage with stealthy creeping growth habit, this variety is a brilliant choice for mixed containers. Petite light-green to silver leaves produce a dense and thick mantle that cascades over your patio container.

Digitalis ‘Foxlight Plum Gold’

Digitalis ‘Foxlight Plum Gold’ makes a great focal point in gardens and containers with bold colours.  Flowers face outward for better show and bloom all Summer long.

Digitalis X. ‘Polkadot Pippa’

A new series, this hybrid Foxglove is sterile so it flowers for many weeks, beginning in midsummer. It forms a low rosette of dark green leaves, bearing taller stems that hold spikes of dangling bells.

Emilia javonica

Bright orange to red thickly fringed flowers like sturdy little powder puffs. Airy habit. Long slender stems good for cutting 15"+.

Ensete maurelii

Winter hardy to USDA Zones 10-11. In St. Louis, plants may be grown outdoors during the growing season (either directly in the ground or in containers), but must be brought indoors for overwintering or they will not survive.

Jasminum ‘Fiona Sunrise’

Who would have thought that a golden leaved Jasmine would be hardy in southern New England? We have had this vine winter over for several years now (we're in zone 6A or B, depending on the year).

Lysimachia autropurpurea ‘Beaujolais’

Lysimachia atropurpurea is a compact, short-lived perennial that grows in a clump to 20” tall on strong upright stems. Easily grown in moist, humusy, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade.

Melianthus major

Melianthus major (Honey Bush) - This fast-growing evergreen open shrub can grow up to 12 feet tall or more and spread rapidly by sucker roots.

Neoregalia ‘Neorustic’

Like other bromeliads, pups (baby plants) form off the mother plant. I’ve found that the Neoregelia mother plant actually lasts quite a long time before producing those pups.

Nicotiana ‘Tinkerbell’

A Breeding Breakthrough in Nicotiana Tinkerbell demands closer inspection, as the clusters of dusky-rose petals have lime-green backs and unusual azure blue pollen in the centre of each flower.

Rumex ‘Raspberry Dressing’

Verbena bonariensis ‘Meteor Shower’ is a free-flowering, dwarf Vervain cultivar with dense of small, violet-lilac flowers over a long season.

Yucca filimentosa ‘Color Guard’

Slightly arching, sword-shaped, striped foliage of creamy-white against dark green provides great architectural interest. Showy spires of fragrant snow white blooms in summer.
